Ceremonial Textile or Wall Hanging

Yellow, Red and Brown embroidery on red cotton

Indian ceremonial textile, probably western or northwestern India with a solid red ground and dense all-over decorative yellow, red and brown embroidery. The piece is constructed of several joined panels of cloth, a technique that is common in village textile work.

The center features hundreds of small butis, floral/star-like motifs arranged across the red field. The textile is framed by elaborate narrow geometric bands and broad striped end borders. The combination of red, gold and geometric decoration suggests a festive or ceremonial textile tradition of western or northwestern India.
