Block Printed Panel
Navy with white design
Traditional Japanese block printing for textiles centers on Katazome, an ancient stencil and paste-resist dyeing method. Artisans apply a rice-paste mixture through carved paper stencils onto the fabric; once dried, the exposed fabric is dyed, leaving a crisp, un-dyed design where the paste blocked the pigment.
