Khanga
African roller-printed, blue pattern with Swahili proverb
The phrase on this khanga, “Mungu hana hasira ni mwingi wa rehema”, says “God is not angry; He is full of mercy”, proclaims a religious sentiment popular on Kenyan khangas. Kenyan kanga textiles (also known as leso) are colorful lightweight 100% cotton rectangular fabrics worn primarily by women across East Africa. Distinguished by a central design (mji) a wide decorative border (pindo) and a printed Swahili proverb or message (jina) kangas are sold in pairs and double as wrap-around skirts, headwraps, shawls, aprons, secure slings to carry babies on a mother's back and cultural statements
-
Historically, the jina allows women to communicate feelings, resolve disputes, or send subtle social messages to peers and family members when direct speech is difficult. They are traditionally presented as gifts during major life events such as weddings, births, and graduations.
This khanga would be worn during religious gatherings, or as a expression of faith, spreading messages of comfort during a difficult time. This khanga is also an example of Islamic and Christian influences found on the East African coast.
