Khanga
African Roller-printed, red and yellow paisleys design with Swahili proverb
Written on the bottom of this textile, “Ahsante sana kma wema wako ulio nitendea” reads “Thank you very much for the kindness you have shown me” in Swahili, the distinctive religious/literary aspect of a Kenyan khanga cloths. The different proverbs found on these khangas determine the occasion. One like this would be a gift for a wedding, family celebration, religious event, or to thank someone for assistance. These printed cotton cloths are central for the East African coast. Manufactured in Nairobi or Mombasa, khangas are usually sold in patching pairs, versatile in everyday life as a skirt, shawl, head covering, baby carrier, or for gifting.
