Women’s Sarong

Blue with white dot pattern

Burmese sarongs, universally known as longyis, are a staple of Myanmar’s traditional wardrobe. They consist of a large sheet of fabric, typically sewn into a cylinder and worn wrapped around the waist to the feet, functioning as a practical, everyday skirt for both men and women.  Longyis are the ubiquitous national and traditional dress worn by a vast majority of the population. Students, office workers, and civil servants in Myanmar often have dress codes requiring traditional attire of a longyi paired with a formal shirt or blouse.

To be "sewn into a tube" generally means that two edges of a material—most often fabric—are stitched together along their length to create a continuous, hollow cylinder.
